Which size?
| Length (approx.) | People | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 1.8 – 2.5 m | 2 – 4 | couples, small gardens |
| 2.5 – 3.5 m | 4 – 6 | families, often with a small changing room |
| over 3.5 m | 6 or more | changing or relaxation room |
Figures vary by manufacturer and diameter. Check the internal bench dimensions.
Permit tip: in the canton of Zurich, buildings up to 6 m² floor area and 2.5 m high are generally permit-free in building zones. In many other cantons, however, the exemption only applies to unheated buildings. Check your canton: building permit by canton.
Wood types
- Spruce / pine: affordable and common, needs good weather protection.
- Thermo-treated wood: more stable and weather-resistant, darker colour, more expensive.
- Cedar (e.g. red cedar): very durable and aromatic, usually premium.
What matters most are the stave thickness (often 40–45 mm or more) and a good roof, e.g. with shingles or metal cladding.

Wood or electric heater?
Wood brings crackling and scent but needs a chimney and firewood. Electric is convenient but usually needs a 400 V connection. Full comparison: wood or electric heater.
How much does a barrel sauna cost?
Small barrel saunas with an electric heater start at around CHF 5,000 to 6,000, models with a changing room from about CHF 6,500. Foundation, power and transport come on top – all items in our cost guide.
