Garden sauna cabin: more space, more comfort

A sauna cabin is a small garden house with a sauna room – often with a changing room or relaxation area. It offers more space than a barrel sauna and can be planned more individually.

What matters

  • Wall thickness: log-built sauna cabins come in different wall thicknesses. Thicker walls store heat better and are more stable.
  • Insulation: an insulated shell saves energy. Some cantons (e.g. Bern) set energy requirements for larger or multi-room outdoor saunas.
  • Changing room: handy for changing and cooling down. Note: a heated changing room can trigger extra requirements.
  • Windows and glass front: light and views, but more heat loss – the heater then needs more output.
  • Roof: shingles, metal or green roof; at higher altitudes, consider the snow load.
  • Door: opening outwards and without a lock – an important safety rule for any sauna.

Planning the size

If you want to lie down, allow around 1.8 to 2 m of bench length per person; for sitting, about 60 cm per person is enough. The room should give enough headroom above the top bench – but a room that is too high heats up more slowly.

Permit: a sauna cabin almost always exceeds the limits for permit-free small buildings. Expect to file an application – the rules for your canton are in our overview.

Cost

Sauna cabins usually range from around CHF 10,000 to 20,000 and more, depending on size, wood, glazing and fit-out. Details: how much does an outdoor sauna cost?

Permit rules for garden saunas differ from canton to canton, for example Ticino, Valais and Solothurn. All 26 cantons compared: Building permit.

Frequently asked questions

Does a sauna cabin need a building permit?
Usually yes, because it exceeds the limits for permit-free small buildings and is heated. The details depend on the canton.
How big should a sauna cabin be?
For 2–4 people a small sauna room is enough; with a changing and relaxation room it will be larger accordingly. Bench length and headroom above the top bench are key.
