Name and construction

The word comes from Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs: temāzcalli is translated as "house of heat" or derived from "to bathe" (teme) and "house" (calli). A temazcal is often a round dome of volcanic stone, adobe bricks, wood or other materials. Inside, water is poured onto hot volcanic stones. The round shape is often interpreted as a symbol of the womb.

History at a glance

  1. Pre-Columbian eraTemazcales are documented archaeologically, for example at Joya de Cerén (El Salvador) and in the Cross Group at Palenque (Mexico).
  2. AztecsThe Codex Magliabechiano depicts an Aztec temazcal.
  3. Healing ritualThe temazcal was used for purification, for example after battle or the ceremonial ball game.
  4. TodayIndigenous communities still use it; traditional midwives (comadronas) support women before, during and after childbirth in the temazcal.

Parallels with other cultures

Like the North American sweat lodge, the temazcal is more than a bath: a place of healing and ritual. Its role in childbirth recalls the Finnish tradition of children being born in the sauna.

For your garden, the related concept is the small free-standing hut: the sauna cabin.
