From smoke sauna to chimney sauna

The oldest sauna is the smoke sauna: it had to be heated for hours and then ventilated. The stove with a chimney changed that. The smoke goes straight out, the cabin stays clean and the fire can keep burning while you bathe. This is how the wood-fired sauna became the common form in Finland – still mainly in the countryside today, while the electric sauna dominates in cities.

The kiuas: heater and stones

The Finnish word for the sauna heater is kiuas. On a wood-fired heater, a basket or chamber of stones sits above the firebox. The stones store heat and release steam (löyly) when water is thrown on them. In Finland, birch is the traditional firewood.

A wood-fired heater in your garden

  • No three-phase power needed: ideal if the sauna is further from the house.
  • Chimney and fire safety: professionally installed, with the clearances specified by the manufacturer.
  • Untreated wood only: in Switzerland only dry, untreated wood may be burned.
  • Permit: anything with a fire is assessed more strictly – check the rules in your canton.
  • Neighbours: think about smoke and sparks when choosing the location.
