What kelo wood is
Pines in Finland can live around 500 years. If a pine dies and stays standing, it slowly dries out and sheds its bark. It takes about 35 to 50 years to become kelo. After that the dead tree can stand for another 250 to 700 years before its roots give way. Kelo trees often have a spiral grain.
Kelo for saunas and log houses
Kelo is regarded as a durable building material for log houses and saunas. Today it's rarely used, though: sourcing and processing are laborious, and kelo logs can cost up to about five times as much as freshly felled timber. The photo above shows a traditional log sauna cabin.
Ecology: kelo is a habitat
Standing dead wood such as kelo is an important habitat for specialised fungi, lichens, woodpeckers, cavity-nesting birds and insects. That's why kelo trees are rare in managed forests. If you're offered kelo, ask where the wood comes from.

A kelo sauna in your garden
A kelo sauna is a log-built sauna cabin – with all that entails: a solid foundation, usually a building permit and a budget well above a standard sauna cabin (cost). A wood-fired heater suits it just as well as an electric one.
For a sauna in the garden, each canton handles the building permit differently, for example Ticino, Valais and Solothurn. All 26 cantons: Building permit.
